Belhelvie Community Trust (BCT) was formed in October 2014 and became a SCIO in April 2015 (SCO45563) with the purpose of Community Development in the rural parish of Belhelvie which includes settlements of Belhelvie, Balmedie, Potterton, Blackdog and Whitecairns and all homes in between.
Belhelvie Community Trust emerged from the combined ideas of various people in the parish of Belhelvie, who came together to explore how we could work together to support existing community groups and develop new ones in response to identified community need.
There are many things a community can do to help itself, build resilience and create a better place to live. With the best will in the world, all things can’t be done at once and it is one of the jobs of BCT to identify community needs and wishes and with community consultation, turn them into the priorities and actions.
Since its inception, BCT has developed and continued to run new projects and supported other groups and clubs in various parts of the parish. Details of these will be found later in this website as it develops…
For more information, please contact BCT c/o Rosie Nicol.28 Whitehorse Terrace, Balmedie, Aberdeenshire AB23 8XF 01358 742557 or look at Belhelvie Community Trust Facebook Page
Instead of our normal craft club session – we are going to run a Snowman Drive (beetle drive) instead at the same time as Craft Club runs. £1.50 per person. Mum’s/dads/grandparents please come along too.
The Craft Club is run by volunteers of Balmedie Congregational Church, it is held in the school on Thursday nights from 6.30-7.30pm at £1.50 per night.
Many thanks to Fiona and Joni for producing a fine spread and lovely thank-you cake to mark the end of season at the Bothy this evening.
I just wanted to say a big THANK-YOU to all the Sand Bothy volunteers for all your work this year, keeping the kiosk open and providing refreshments for visitors to the Country Park.
The Bothy is still open for bookings and we have classes on 3rd and 10th November. The next big event for us all will be Santa’s visit on 8th and 9th December, which will be here before we know it…I’ll keep you posted with any developments.
Depending on weather, the Kiosk will be closing until March or April. The Sand Bothy itself however is bookable all year round for classes, small groups and meetings. We don’t do children’s birthday parties or exercise classes, but will consider other requests…
We will be open on 8th and 9th December, when the Bothy transforms into Santa’s grotto – see “events” for further details.
The Sand Bothy is run entirely by volunteers as a facility for local people and for visitors from further afield. Thanks to all our volunteers, and all our supporters too!

This documentary is a hugely positive, affirming and inspirational film exploring community led creative solutions to the challenges we face in this modern world around food, energy, transport, economics and education.
It has been described as the perfect antidote to the current sense of global despondency and we are really excited to be bringing the film to Oldmeldrum. There will be teas and coffees served after to give people the opportunity to chat about the film and network.
Please spread the word far and wide and let us know if you are coming to help us plan for numbers.

A big thank you to everyone who was involved in any way with the PAMIS day yesterday (SAT 9tH Sept 2017), including the team of guys who cleared the boardwalk on Friday to allow access for wheelchairs and the pony.
About 10 families came along this time and response from children, young people, parents and carers alike was very positive. The whole event was brilliantly organised by Amy from PAMIS who puts so much thought and effort into ensuring that everyone has a good day.
We now have keys to big sheds on way to beach. Council staff are going to clear at least one of them out, then we will be able to clean and paint (all offers of help gratefully accepted) and we can start work on our beach buggy project…
Yesterday’s event reinforced for me just how much I take for granted as an able-bodied person, including the ability to enjoy our wonderful beach, when others just can’t manage . The Sand Bothy can help to change this situation….
Next weekend on Saturday and Sunday we will have 3 NEOS artists in the Bothy (they are there from Wednesday morning – pop down if you can ) and outside will be a group from Charlie House respite care. The pony OBAMA will once again be giving wheelchair users rides along the beach. The Charlie House team are bringing their own Gazebos, catering etc, but I have said that Bothy team will help in any way we can, with access past bollards, with hot water and loan of tables. It will be a busy day all round!

The application process is online and more details can be found at,
There is unfortunately a very short time frame for the current applications window which closes on Monday 28th August. However, it is currently intended that other opportunities to apply will arise at future dates.
This is part of a much wider recruitment of Co-Op members to step up to be member pioneers to promote the work that the Co-op does in the community and amongst its members. profits from the various retail or trading parts of the Co-operative group goes to many local causes and as dividends to its members. literally millions have been spent supporting activities in communities that are decided by Co-operative members. This is why, what co-operative member pioneers will be so important.
We’re recruiting Member Pioneers to bring people together in your local community.

The Community Trust is a new idea. Community Trusts are growing in Scotland. you can watch a wee film about one such Trust here: What is a Development Trust
It is made up of members/Supporters, who control it through a Board of Directors or trustees. Sounds complicated? Its not.

Exploring Volunteer Practice – Inclusive Volunteering Online Training
These sessions are free of charge and open to anyone who has an interest in Inclusive Volunteering. Research indicates that people who are at risk of experiencing exclusion can benefit from volunteering. We know, however, that many people face barriers to becoming a volunteer. As we start to consider how to support and encourage more inclusive volunteering, this session is an opportunity to share the challenges faced by volunteer managers in making volunteering accessible for all people.

After storms last year, Aberdeenshire Council have now completed work on a new bridge across the Eigie Burn making beach access southwards easier.
The bridge is more substantial than the one it replaced. The foundations are significantly deeper and this one is set fair to last a long time. If that is not chancing fate!
Remember, when you go down to the country park and the beach to take a look, why not join our beach litter squad and pick up a few bits of rubbish as you womble along.
If we all enjoy the money the council has spent on the new facility, it’s only fair that we keep the beach clean and tidy!
Hello everyone, just a wee reminder that there is a BB meeting tomorrow evening, 7.30 at Balmedie Library to make plans for year ahead, have a cuppie and a natter!
And a wee update…8 of us were out and about this morning in the rain…there is a new path through the woods near changing rooms, so 6 folk were clearing all the rubbish that had been exposed, and council staff will collect this afternoon or tomorrow with their lorry. Margaret and I also collected around the courts and filled a bag, but still a lot to do…can we put litter-picking on the agenda for tomorrow so we can give Helen a hand?
A group of residents, through Belhelvie Community Trust are getting things done in Potterton. This pop up cafe is for everyone to have a cuppa and a fine piece with a chat about how to make our community better, fun, with more facilities.
Pop down and meet your friends and neighbours. 10am to 12 noon.

A fire which broke out at a former North-east cafe is today being treated as suspicious.
Police have confirmed they are investigating the blaze which took hold of the former community cafe, Tarts and Crafts, on Eigie Road, Balmedie, last night.
Four fire engines from Aberdeen and Ellon raced to the scene after the alarm was raised at 11.15pm. It took 19 firefighters to extinguish the blaze and the incident was over by 12.20am.
The fire has burned away the majority of the roof and left the building badly damaged. Last night’s blaze was the second within a month at the old cafe premises – fire crews were also called to the Eigie Road site behind Balmedie Library on July 23.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “We had four units at the scene, the call came in around 11.15pm.
“We sent two from Aberdeen Central, one from North Anderson Drive and one from Ellon. In total 19 firefighters were on the scene, but no specialist equipment was needed.
Police Scotland also attended the incident to support their fire colleagues. A Police Scotland spokesman said: “We were made aware of the fire by Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. It’s going to be looked into. The fire could have been caused by any number things. Currently there is no indication that a joint investigation with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service will take place at this time, but this is speculative and could change.”
Tarts and Crafts, a community cafe and craft gallery staffed by volunteers, closed on July 18 after 11 years in business.
Tarts and Crafts building Eigie Cottage was last night destroyed by fire. Belhelvie Community Trust had started negotiations about the future of the building. We do not know yet the cause of the fire. Very very sad that this has happened in our community.

Police Scotland is appealing for information following an incident of fireraising at a disused property in the Balmedie area.
The incident is believed to have happened between 9:15pm and 9:45pm on Thursday 23 July at the property formerly known as Tarts and Crafts in the Eigie Road area.
As a result of the incident, an estimated low four figure sum of damage was caused.
PC Lauren Tate, who is investigating the crime, said: “This incident happened late on in the evening and we’re appealing for anyone who may have seen anything suspicious or has any information to come forward.”
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if you wish to remain anonymous.

Dear All
Aberdeenshire Health and Social Care Partnership’s First Strategic Plan – Have We Got It Right? With the introduction of the Public Bodies (joint Working) (Scotland) Act 2014 Aberdeenshire Council and NHS Grampian have been working together to set up a new partnership to integrate health and social care services in Aberdeenshire.
Its aim is to provide a seamless response to everyone who uses the service; and to strengthen partnerships with our communities and third sector colleagues to support Aberdeenshire citizens to be happier, healthier and to live independently for as long as possible.
Earlier this year a range of meetings and events were held to ask local organisations and the public what should be contained in this new partnership’s strategic plan. A draft Strategic Plan has now been produced setting out priorities for the new partnership. In September, 12 community events are being hosted to share the draft plan with communities to ask if we have got the priorities right.
I hope that many local residents and community representatives will attend these meetings to shape and refine the plan.
The draft strategic plan will be available from the 17 August on the Health and Social Care Integration pages of NHS Grampian and Aberdeenshire council websites. I really want to hear from as many local people as possible, please come along to one of the events. The included flyer provides all the information about the 12 events and how to book a place. I look forward to meeting you in September.
Yours sincerely
Adam Coldwells

Belhelvie Community Trust are looking for help. Do you know a friendly lawyer / solicitor, that can help, pro bono, with an urgent legal matter with trust funds. Not complicated but needs a lawyer. Apparently.
So can anyone help? Any local people a solicitor, partner of one? Have a friend or relative.
Belhelvie Community Trust is applying to Aberdeenshire Council to take on the running of the former Beach Rangers’ Hut, now known as the Sand Bothy, at Balmedie Country Park and Beach.
We plan to have a refreshments kiosk, a permanent display about the beach and to create a venue for a wide range of craft classes and events.
We need to hear from local residents what they would like to see at the Sand Bothy, so please get in touch with your ideas, and share this post with friends and family.
Nothing is definite and there’s lots of work to do, but the more people who get involved the greater the chance of success. The Sand Bothy has been sadly neglected for years, but it deserves to be used again. It could become an asset to the local community and to visitors from further afield.
BCT meetings are usually monthly. There may be other project meetings by members taking forward individual work projects. Meetings for members, where all the work comes together and shared, updated and discussed are these monthly regular meetings.
They are always the 4th Monday of the month, unless special arrangements are made. Therefore the next planned meetings are:
July 27th 2015
August 24th 2015
September 28th 2015
October 26th 2015
November 23rd 2015
No meeting in December, then AGM will be 25th January 2016
Our meetings are relatively short, informative and open to everyone to contribute freely. Often inspirational and full of new ideas.
Zero Waste Scotland, the government’s waste advisors, are to make available funding to support an increase in repair activities within Scotland’s Third Sector Re-use Organisations which might include Belhelvie Community Trust by enabling access to training opportunities around repair, refurbishment and upcycling of key material streams.
Funding is available to cover the costs of tuition, travel and subsistence costs where appropriate for BCT Volunteers and any materials or equipment associated with the training course in question. This funding is being provided under EU regulations with awards of up to £1,800 available to successful applicants.
Please contact BCT to register your interest, as this is competitive funding amongst third sector groups.
Belhelvie Community Trust has registered with the Press and Journal to enter their competition to win a Community Minibus! The area covered by the Trust is a rural one, and transport is a problem. For example, there is only one bus an hour from Balmedie to Aberdeen. There are no buses to link villages in the Parish of Belhelvie, so if you don’t have a car and live in Potterton you can’t get to facilities in Balmedie. If you don’t have a car it takes 2 buses to get to doctors’ surgery in Bridge of Don. There are lots of community groups in the parish that could use a minibus including pre-school clubs, pensioners’ clubs, uniformed organisations, church goers and sports clubs. It could be used for social outings, shopping, doctors’ visits, sports events and getting to church.
To increase our chance of winning we have to submit tokens which are being printed daily in P& J until August.
Please help by collecting tokens!
Once you have a lot of tokens please message this page to arrange collection.
Balmedie Leisure Centre are our community run community facility and they are having their AGM. All residents and uses are invited to take an interest and attend.
Tuesday, 26 May 2015 at 7.00 PM. Please contact the leisure centre for more information about what will be happening.

Belhelvie Community Trust has been awarded charitable status. The trust is now a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) number SCO45563
Some time ago, Better Balmedie started fundraising to create a Community Sensory Garden in the village. Belhelvie Community Trust has taken the idea forward and it has now been agreed by Aberdeenshire Council that work can start within the Magnificent 7s Woods, with work to be carried out by the local community and Aberdeenshire Council Landscape Services team. We need to start right at the beginning, by clearing any rubbish out of the woods, cutting back any unwanted undergrowth and clearing the old wall at the entrance to the woods, ready for its rebuilding.
The Trust hopes that folks of all ages will get involved in this project, which will be a long-term one, starting small and gradually growing. Just an hour or two of your time would make such a difference! Please wear suitable footwear, and bring secateurs or loppers to help with the clearance.
SEE YOU THEN!
(The woods are accessible on foot up the road next to Library to Tarts and Crafts then turn left through gap in wall…)

The newsletter is put together by a team of volunteers and we value of advertisers. Advertisers get their message and brand image to virtually every house in the parish. It proves excellent value for advertising and people really appreciate those advertisers supporting the community in this way.

Chairman’s Report – 2015 AGM at the White Horse Hotel, Balmedie Monday 26th January
The aim of the Trust is to operate throughout Belhelvie Parish and membership is open to all individuals who have an interest in the Parish.
CONCEPTION – Volunteers in many local organisations had identified that there was a need to bridge gaps and pool resources and so the Trust was established to create an “umbrella” group to support existing community projects and organisations and to create new initiatives throughout the parish, for the benefit of its residents. In community development terms to “encourage community cohesion”…
GESTATION – We have cogitated and considered and we are about to apply for charitable status, we have fine tuned our constitution applied for start-up funding and worked on existing and new projects and I take particular pleasure in seeing the dissemination of information of Parish events through our Facebook page, website and blog as well as in the Banter.
DEVELOPMENT – Our major piece of work will be the acquisition and shared occupancy of the former Ranger Hut at the Beach, and we now have the final draft of our business plan. But we have also been actively involved in other projects: the living Christmas tree, First Responders, defibrillator provision, asset transfer for the sensory garden, Tarts and Crafts tenure, signposting around Balmedie, dry-stane dyking, and upgrading the garden grounds at Tarts and Crafts. These are all either completed or work in progress. It’s not been an effortless delivery, but WE don’t do disappointment.
DELIVERY– Several local group members and individuals have consistently leant their support through this first year and now we present the ‘infant’ as it has evolved and taken shape and already the vocabulary has expanded to include constitution, membership, indemnity, insurance, liabilities, applications, aspirations, roles, responsibilities, partnership working, environmental projects, social enterprise. So before we move on to funding sources, retailing, up-cycling, playrooms and classrooms, we will be consulting, surveying and assimilating what we want and what we need for our base at the Beach. After all, we do want to be in a position to start trading this summer and judging by the tenacity of this management team I think our motto should be: Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success. Let’s get it done; done well and done in time.
Audrey Jeffries
The New Chairman of Belhelvie Community Trust appointed at the meeting was Allan Jeffrey of Balmedie. Minutes of the AGM will follow shortly for members.

First meeting of 2015 will be on Thursday 29th January at 7.30pm at the Library. This will be a planning meeting when we decide on the tasks for the year around the village and in the polytunnel and garden.
Margaret is busy working on the programme of speakers, visits and events for the year, and will have more information for you on 29th.
The catalogue from Gardening Direct arrived this morning reminding me that we will soon have to decide which plug plants we need to be ordering in February.
To raise money this year the group are making Christmas Sweetie Wreaths. Each LARGE wreath contains 2 and a half tubs of celebration chocolates. We are selling the wreaths at £25 so if you are looking for a unique decoration/gift then get in touch to place your order.
These are our lovely sweetie wreaths, medium sized in a fab choice of colours for £10. All proceeds to the village Christmas lights – please contact us for orders.

As you may, or may not know, monies have to be raised each year to put up the lights in the village, take them down, maintain and insure them. As you can appreciate this is quite a considerable financial undertaking and we are always looking at new ways to pay for all of this. We are currently making Xmas Sweets Wreaths which we are selling for £25 and planning other items for sale at a local craft fair later this month but realise that we need to look beyond this. Having spoken to groups from other communities we now propose seeking sponsorship from local businesses to cover part of the costs.
The sponsorship we are asking for is £50, or more should you wish, and we are pleased to say that we have already had a couple of promises to start the ball rolling. Each £50 donation will be acknowledged by a laminated scroll attached to a lamppost to show who has sponsored that particular light this year. We also plan to have a write up in the New Year Banter listing our sponsors.
Additionally, families, local groups or individuals may wish to support the lights by providing sponsorship or donation – please get in touch with us if this would be of interest to you!
If you are heading out this afternoon, stop by this excellent Community owned volunteer Cafe and Crafts place in Balmedie. They have a great idea of £5 craft fayre. You or your kids can pick up some crafty gifts that won’t blow the bank and will help the community as well. Fab idea.

The Gruffalo had a great time at the Balmedie Gruffalo trail last weekend. A large number of parents and children came to do the trail, find the clues and meet the Gruffalo. There may have been the odd occasion when he had to take a break for a cup of tea ( we have the evidence) and he seemed sometimes to answer to the name of Harry…. but all the time the kids were enchanted.
Plenty of facepaints, sparkles, dough cakes and activities kept everyone busy and mums and das seemed to drink gallons of tea and coffee, soup and ate loads of lovely buns and cakes.
All in all a great success for the Tarts and Crafts team. Congratulations.
Aberdeenshire’s Community Planning Partnership will be helping to run a Planning For Realevent at Potterton.
This is not the first Planning For Real event, but is to try and progress ideas from the community of Potterton and Belhelvie, building on previous occasions and information.
Planning For Real can help Aberdeenshire Council and the local Belhelvie Community Council by indicating what the community wants so that decisions can better reflect local views.
It can help Belhelvie Community Trust, (BCT) in developing projects and groups which will organise and deliver what people themselves have wanted.
Everyone who has an interest in the future of Potterton and Belhelvie should come along on October 11 and drop in to ” have your say” or to volunteer with Belhelvie community trust and create local groups to get things done locally.
Saturday 11th October 2014, Potterton Community Centre
If you want to know more about planning for real, please use the links below.
If you have any further questions and want to speak to somebody about Planning For Real or cannot attend on Saturday October 11, then please contact Sophie Humphries

Hello all, help wanted please…if you have a car with a towbar and are prepared to take a turn towing the bowser round the village watering the planters could you please let me know? Barry has been round a couple of times and Bruce did the watering while Barry was on holiday, but it would be great if more people could join in to help. It may be that we have a wet summer so there will be less need to water, but we really need to water at least once a week….
Please click on the link above to download a PDF copy of the application form which you can print off and return to: 8 Old Mill Crescent, Balmedie, AB 23 8WA. Please remember to sign the form as this is required in our Trust constitution to become a member.
Please find attached agenda for Monday’s meeting, final draft minutes of April meeting and proposed amendment to Constitution.
Please note that the meeting will be at 7.30 in the Whitehorse Inn as usual, as the refurbishment there is not starting until July. Thanks to Whitehorse for the use of the room again…

If you wish to volunteer could you let Rosie Nicol know if you are going to be here to help at sale…we usually need several folk to help on the day.
Tom will be printing off flyers soon and I’m hoping that they will be delivered to every house in Balmedie with next Banter, which is due out 24th / 25th May We could have book stall again, also teddies and bottles of whisky do well….so any help please!

Hello everyone, hope you are all enjoying the sunny weather today…
Just wanted to remind you that on Thursday 24th April Better Balmedie will be meeting at the Library at 7.30 for film show with Mary Cane of “Belhelvie in the 1930s”. Mary’s has subtitled her evening “Belhelvie… Rag Bag and Tell Tale”, so I’m sure we are in for a fun but informative evening…I’m certainly looking forward to seeing the parish as it used to be….see you there!
On Friday 25th April we are litter-picking with school children, meeting at the school at 10.50, and we can help the children until 12.30, so hope that some of you will be able to lend a hand …
On Saturday 26th April we will be meeting at Polytunnel at 10 am for litter-pick. Tom has produced flyers which Margaret is taking down to school, to go home with all children, so perhaps this time we will get some help from families in the village.
Just a note to remind you that our favourite gardener Tim (Head Gardener at Leith Hall) is coming back to see us on Wednesday 30th April to talk about growing vegetables, outside and in the polytunnel. I know you all enjoy Tim’s workshops so hope to see you there at 10 approx. The workshop is free to members..
This example of a film and explanation below, shows what a development trust can do. Is this something that inspires you. If it does contact us.
Fintry Development Trust
Fintry is a small rural community between the Campsie and Fintry Hills. Its Community Council was keen to explore ways for the village to become greener … the Fintry Development Trust has become the vehicle to meet this challenge.
A developer, Falck Renewables, approached the Community Council about a 14-turbine windfarm they were proposing nearby. The Community Council saw the potential, both, for developing ‘our own turbine’ and for moving towards becoming a carbon-neutral village.
Four residents were asked to take the negotiations forward. They formed Fintry Renewable Energy Enterprise (FREE) and carried out extensive community consultation through leafleting, a series of meetings and a survey at the annual ‘Fintry Fling’. Local people were very supportive and with this mandate the Community Council felt able to reject a community benefit payment in favour of pursuing ownership of a turbine and the significant income it would create.
Prolonged negotiations with the developer followed. Developers often sell on windfarms and having a ‘sitting tenant’ owning one turbine would have been commercially unacceptable. The solution was for the community to receive the equivalent of one fifteenth of the total income, while FREE agreed to take out a loan to cover the cost of this extra turbine. Through patience and commitment, along with cross-party political support, the community effectively owns one of the 15 turbines within the now working windfarm.
Gordon Cowtan from the Trust continues “Fintry Development Trust the umbrella organisation was set-up in 2007 and has charitable status: FREE is wholly owned by the Trust and is its commercial arm. The Trust receives upwards of £50,000 per year while the loan is repaid, and potentially over £400,000 once repaid.
We’ve used the first part of this income to complete a major project insulating local homes. Step one was an energy survey of the houses in the village including an infra-red snapshot of the front of each house so that people could see where heat was escaping. This was on a winter evening when heat loss would be strongest, and we’d told people and the police that photographers would be going round. Of course, someone forgot and rang the police, who’d also forgotten … fortunately the confusion was quickly sorted”.
Now almost half of all local homes (46%) have taken up the offer of free cavity wall and roof insulation. A free, doorstep insulation service really works. People were happy for the fitters to turn up and get on with the job: if they’d had to apply for a grant there’d have been a much lower uptake. We’re now looking at different types of insulation for the houses that weren’t able to benefit from this approach. We’ve also funded energy-saving measures in the sports club and a new heating system in the village hall, and we’ve established a village database through the survey work – so we now know what individual households want and need.
Minute of the Belhelvie Community Trust 24th March 2014
I have produced this document and consulted with those of the Management Team present and we believe this adequately reflects the substance of discussions held on that evening.
Since this BCT meeting we have had our meeting with BCC, the Leisure Centre Trust and Aberdeenshire Council representatives and look forward to a second meeting to discuss roles, aspirations and possible collaborative projects in the future.
This is the Community website for BCT (Belhelvie Community Trust).
We were formed in February 2014. We are a Development trust and have applied to be a member of the Development trust Association Scotland to further our aims, learn from other trusts, develop best practice and contribute to its community of members.
The development trust is an idea from various people n the community who have come together to explore how, through getting local groups to work together can co-ordinate and create new groups, social enterprises.
